Day 9 - 11 Indian Ocean
Peponi is a Kenyan institution. The hotel has been the centre of island life since it first opened in 1967 and is owned and run by the same family today. Set at the tip of a 13km sweep of sand, the 28 oceanfront suites are simply furnished and accented with an eclectic collection of Swahili artefacts and African art. There are no televisions, telephones or high-tech distractions, just ceiling fans and handsome wood-carved four-poster beds swathed in mosquito nets. On the bougainvillaea-shaded terrace, guests mingle with locals or relax in hammocks under coconut trees or around the freshwater pool. Life on Lamu moves to a wonderfully languid beat - there are no vehicles on the island, just donkeys and dhows - and days at Peponi follow a similar rhythm. Swim, snorkel or water ski on the pancake-flat waters, head into UNESCO-protected Lamu Town just two miles along the coast or join regulars on the beach sipping an Old Pal, the hotel's legendary signature cocktail.
