It is essential to be prepared for an Arctic expedition – there are few places to buy essentials here should you forget something! Whilst most items on this list seem like common sense, there are some lesser thought of necessities that might surprise you. Read our guide on what to pack for your Arctic expedition below.
BRING PLENTY OF LAYERS
Quark | David Merron
Layering up is vital for an expedition in the Arctic – and a thermal underlayer is a great place to start. However, with temperatures sometimes comparable to a mild British winter, you should be able to peel off the layers easily – just in case you do find yourself a little too warm. A hat, scarf and gloves are also imperative. It is best to bring two pairs of gloves: a thin pair for taking photos easily and a waterproof pair for protection during zodiac safaris, where there is the likelihood of some splash.
STAY DRY WITH WATERPROOFS
As mentioned, embarking on a zodiac safari invites the possibility of some Arctic splash. A waterproof jacket is therefore essential, as well as waterproof trousers and a good pair of long boots. Most expedition operators provide guests with a supremely warm, waterproof and comfortable expedition parka to wear, as well as appropriate footwear – our consultants will be able to advise.
PREPARE FOR THE SUN

While the Arctic is renowned for its chilly temperatures and snowy landscapes, you will still need protection against the sun. Snow is prone to reflecting harsh UV light from the sun, so a high SPF sunscreen will protect you from burning, while a pair of polarised sunglasses will come in handy to limit the glare and enjoy the finer details.
DON’T FORGET YOUR SWIMSUIT

One of the more surprising items to consider, a swimsuit is essential for those looking to take the Arctic plunge. While not for the faint hearted, those seeking a thrill will not want to miss this unique opportunity.
PHONE MEMORY & SPARE BATTERIES
Spectacular sights are around every corner in the Arctic, meaning you’ll want to have plenty of memory free on your phone for photographs – especially for those rare glimpses of the region’s elusive polar bears! Spare memory cards for cameras will be useful for the same reason, as well as some extra batteries which tend to deplete faster in colder conditions.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

You never know when a wildlife encounter might pop up – or indeed where. A set of binoculars is therefore recommended on your packing list so that you can view the region’s majestic creatures even from a distance. Should you have any days at sea planned during your voyage, bringing a good book or two is an excellent way to pass the time, not least against a backdrop of stunning Arctic scenery. You might also consider taking a waterproof backpack, which will be useful for storing many of the items listed above!
