There’s no such thing as a typical family, so why should there be a typical family holiday? When your children are small there may be nothing better than a staffed private family villa in southern Europe or a fully-equipped resort in Mauritius, where Mum and Dad can spend some much-needed time together while the little ones are looked after in an excellent Kids’ Club. For slightly older children we can recommend family-friendly African safari lodges where bedrooms are interconnecting and game drives are designed with shorter attention spans in mind. Or perhaps charter a gulet and explore the quietest reaches of the Mediterranean with round-the-clock access to the sea, water sports on tap and family dinners together at anchor under the stars.
Spring and autumn half term holidays are well-timed for a holiday in the Arabian Peninsula where adventure awaits in the form of desert camping, camel riding and Red Sea diving and snorkelling. For longer trips and a dash of the exotic, combine temple viewing with thrilling zip-lining at Angkor in Cambodia or head to Nihiwatu, on Sumba Island in Indonesia, a surfing mecca immersed in traditional Sumbanese culture with riding, massages and spearfishing to boot.
