LOCATION:
Thanda is a small private island located off the coast of Mafia Island in the southern part of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve. Encircled by white sands and turquoise waters it provides a perfect little eight-hectare paradise to anyone lucky enough to rent it.
ACCOMMODATION:
Available for exclusive use only Thanda comprises a main house with five large bedrooms plus two, two-bedroom, Tanzanian-style bandas that can sleep between four and eight people each. All rooms in the main house are air-conditioned and open directly onto the beach while the bandas are split over two floors and comprise two twin/double en-suite bedrooms and benefit from a cooling sea breeze.
FOOD & DRINK:
Every kind of dining experience has been thought of from the breakfast boma to the barbecue area and pizza oven. Join Thanda’s oyster pickers and sample their finds straight from the sea with a glass of champagne or ask the team to set up an Arabian Nights evening with rugs, incense and low tables providing the backdrop for an exotic feast. However and whatever you prefer to eat, the dining experience at Thanda is tailored to your requirements and the head chef will call you before arrival to discuss your preferences.
FACILITIES:
It’s your own private island so it’s really up to you what you do whilst there. A variety of vessels is available for deep-sea fishing, reef snorkelling and sailing whilst on land you could rally your party into a tennis (or table tennis) tournament or an energetic game of beach volleyball.
There’s a yoga sala, kayaks and SUP boards while motorized water sports such as jet skiing and wakeboarding can also be enjoyed.
Thanda boasts a rim-flow pool, should you tire of swimming in the crystalline waters of the Indian Ocean, and treatment beds that the on-site therapist can set up wherever you wish to deliver a rejuvenating massage.
There’s even a Steinway piano and an air-conditioned gym.
OUT & ABOUT:
Take a tour of Chole Island, famed for its traditional boat makers, for a better understanding of the archipelago’s history and to visit a local community. If you like, the chef can accompany you to provide lunch en-route on a deserted island.
In August you may be lucky enough to witness turtle hatching while for divers there’s the possibility to swim with whale sharks from October to February. Diving is arranged with a local outfit on nearby Mafia Island.
Cruise around Thanda and its neighbouring islands on their modern boat, complete with music system and cocktail bar, or hire a traditional Arabian sailing dhow.
