On the northwestern shore of the tranquil Ikuchijima island, brimming with vivid lemon groves, resides the inviting Azumi Setoda. A 140-year-old estate once home to the eminent Horiuchi family, Azumi now welcomes guests who seek an authentic immersion into Japanese island living. The ryokan’s calming design perfectly captures the gentle ambience of its island backdrop with minimalist interiors crafted using natural materials, and is unsurprisingly the tactful vision of AMAN founder Adrian Zecha. Rooms occupy both the ground and second floor, allowing guests to opt for either a garden or private balcony. All are equipped with a cedarwood bathtub which pervades the room with a delightful aroma when filled.
Dining here is an experience in itself, with meals served on the Horiuchi family’s own charming tableware. Served kaiseki, the talented and experienced Chef Akita has crafted an innovative multi-course menu which champions the tantalising flavours of the Setouchi region, with fresh ingredients sourced locally to ensure this. Look out for the aptly named ‘Carrot’, a dish which deliciously showcases seven different ways this versatile vegetable can be prepared.
