Overlooking one of the moats employed to defend the Imperial Palace from invasion, Palace Hotel encapsulates Tokyo’s ever-present contrast of old and new. This location is difficult to beat, just steps from the Imperial Palace Gardens, and this very much gives the feel of an oasis within the heart of the city. World-class shopping and dining can also be found on the doorstep – though a superb range of restaurants on-site mean guests do not need to stray too far if a day exploring the wonders of Tokyo has taken its toll.
Though the hotel first began welcoming guests in the 1960s, it was rebuilt and refurbished from top to bottom in 2012. The look throughout is understated with clean-lined furnishings and an earthy, nature-inspired colour palette that reflects the landscaped surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the rooms and communal spaces in light. Unusually, for Tokyo, the hotel occupies the entire building in which is resides. Also unusual is the fact that many of the Palace’s rooms and suites feature private balconies – you may even catch a prized glimpse of Mount Fuji on a clear day.
