Hidden in the forests surrounding Lao's most beautiful city, Rosewood Luang Prabang surpasses all expectations. A picturesque river runs through the core of this jungle hideaway, drawing birdsong - the soundtrack for days on end. Structures reflect the French-Lao architecture for which the city is famous, while interiors evoke the style of ancient temples with lashings of gold ombre, a nod to the colonial era. While the atmosphere invokes a sense of seclusion, temples, shops and local villages are only minutes away. Head out on forest treks led by Buddhist monks who also conduct private meditation sessions. Other highlights include nature trails to waterfalls, Mekong river cruises and visits to Luang Prabang at dawn to see the ritual of saffron-robed novice monks in their hundreds collecting their alms.
