Perched on the edge of a mature coconut grove above a pristine sweep of Sri Lankan coastline, the design of Amanwella is an ode to Geoffrey Bawa's tropical modernist movement. With just 27 stone and timber suites strung along the hillside, guests rarely encounter another soul: this is barefoot luxury at its very best. Sunlight streams through floor-to-ceiling sliding doors into the cool contemporary rooms.
Casual beachside dining is on offer at the Beach Club, and excellent Asian-fusion fare is served in The Restaurant, which boasts sublime views from its elevated terrace. As is the case with many properties in the region, guests are discouraged from swimming in the sometimes formidable sea, but the spectacular 150-foot long infinity pool more than compensates. From the pool's edge you may even be able to spot migrating blue whales and spinner dolphins in the deserted ivory cove below. Amanwalla’s proximity to the ocean also affords guests access to a number of other enjoyable pursuits, such as feeling the adrenaline by surfing the waves or taking a leisurely fishing expedition with a local fisherman.
