The Wallawwa's proximity to Colombo airport means that within an hour of landing you could be replenished with a coconut and sandalwood scrub in the spa, or enjoying a cocktail in the shade of the frangipani-draped terrace. A soulless runway stopover this is not - the Wallawwa is a meticulously restored 200-year-old manor house which once belonged to the Head Chieftain of Galle. The 18 rooms and suites look out on a serene lotus flower-strewn pond in the centre of five acres of tropical gardens. The staff are delightful and winningly flexible, and the spa and restaurant will happily accommodate early morning or late night arrivals.
There is plenty to occupy even the youngest of visitors from cricket and croquet to a children's massage or a paddle in the stone-lined pool. Adults can enjoy the spa’s range of indulgent treatments using products inspired by the benefits of red, green, pink and black tea. On the verandah, chef Gayan dazzles with his signature coconut-laced curries and irresistible homemade ice creams.
