South of Auckland, situated on a 2,500-acre estate, Treetops filters into outstanding scenery of waterfalls, streams and 800-year old native forest. The far-flung location does this traditional hunting lodge many favours. Outdoorsy types can strike out into expansive wilderness, with activities such as riding, mountain biking and hiking to the outrageously ethereal Bridal Veil waterfalls. Beyond this, helicopter rides can swoop over the rugged coastline to take in the country’s sheer scope while excursions lead to Rotorua village and its bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers and inherent Maori culture.
Back at the ranch, there’s few amenities, although the idea of tennis courts and conference rooms would feel incongruous among the timber beams, stone fireplaces and mounted antlers. Outside, deer roam the lawns and trout swim in the rivers, an idyllic backdrop to a great escape.
