Right at the heart of Iceland’s capital sits a design-conscious traveller’s haven: the Canopy by Hilton is an ideal spot from which to explore lively Reykjavik, and discover something of local Icelandic culture while staying within its walls. In a former life, the hotel’s six connected townhouses were a furniture factory, which has informed some of its – almost achingly – cool modern design. Local art hangs throughout, alongside playful wooden interior accessories and plenty of sleek white tiling.
In the restaurant, delicatessen and bar, fresh fish and organic ingredients lead the menus, which change according to the fishermen’s most recent catch and what farmers have in season. Water, meanwhile, is filtered through Icelandic lava. But perhaps most attune to the local lifestyle is the opportunity to take a bike and traverse the city on two wheels, along the sweeping coastline and through streets filled with cultural institutions.
