On a hill facing out to sea, Explora Rapa Nui is a short distance to the south-west of Easter Island's sole town, Hanga Roa. Hewn from the island's volcanic rock and recycled wood from the mainland, its design reflects the houses where the Rapa Nui once lived - but with a contemporary, architectural twist. Inside, bare wood walls, minimalist furnishings plus an absence of WiFi and televisions ensure the emphasis remains on the stunning Pacific panoramas visible from every room. With the environment firmly in mind, the resort's low-lying structure makes the need for air conditioning rare - although it is fully equipped.
Breakfast is a buffet of fresh fruit, eggs and toast, served with views of the coastline. Lunch and dinner hone in on locally caught seafood and light, healthy Chilean classics such as ceviche, empanadas and salad. Menus change according to the catch of the day. Guides can be found planning for the next day at the bar, where you can relax over Chilean wines and Pisco Sours.
