For coffee lovers, no trip to Colombia would be complete without a stay in the country's famous Coffee Triangle, and Hacienda Bambusa is set right in the heart of its rolling emerald hills. Overlooking the Vieja River valley, surrounded by plantations and working farmlands, the distant central Andes dominate the skyline here. The hacienda, owned by the Montoya family of motor-racing fame, is a masterclass in simplicity and rustic elegance.
Eight light, airy rooms are set around a charming courtyard, filled with splashes of colour and local guadua bamboo. The chef cooks up delicious regional cuisine which can be enjoyed in various scenic locations around the estate. Hammocks are strung up around the grounds and by the inviting swimming pool, offering the perfect spot for an afternoon siesta or simply observing the hummingbirds flitting in and out of the surrounding vegetation. Days can be filled with excursions to coffee or pineapple plantations, as well as riding, mountain biking and hiking through the pristine valleys of the Coffee Region. Cacao tasting, bird watching and cookery classes are just some of the other activities which can be organised by the hacienda.
