Day 2 Jerash, Ajloun & Salt City
Head north of the city to visit the amazing Greco-Roman site of Jerash. Jerash, part of the Decapolis (the ten big Roman cities of the East), has been called the Pompeii of the East for its unique state of preservation. The city features theatres, churches, temples (Zeus and Artemis), a Nymphaeum and colonnaded streets. Then head to Ajloun to see the castle built by Saladin - an outstanding example of Arab/Islamic military architecture and a linchpin in his campaign to oust the Crusaders from Jordan in 1189.
Continue to Salt City, an Ottoman Empire trading hub, and explore the old town and the narrow streets on foot. Back in Amman with time to freshen up, head out with your guide into the old town, to Rainbow Street, and browse the amazing street-food stalls from which supper will be gleaned, to include delicious shawarma, and falafel. Finish off with herbal tea or coffee, for which Jordan is justifiably renowned.

Day 3 Amman to Petra
Start the morning by seeing the key sites in Amman, to include the Citadel and the Roman Amphitheatre. Then head south from the capital with your driver, aiming for Petra and following the King’s Highway. Stop first at Mount Nebo, the supposed burial site of Moses, overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Then continue on to Madaba, known as the city of mosaics, where you will find the oldest map of the Holy Land on the floor of St George’s Church. Arrive into Petra in the late afternoon and relax at your guesthouse accommodation right by the entrance to the ancient city.
Option: You might like to learn some of the techniques of Jordanian cookery by attending a cookery class held at the Petra Kitchen Restaurant, culminating with dining on your own creations!
Overnight: Petra Guesthouse

Day 4 Petra
Spend the day visiting this extraordinary, ancient Nabataean city, which was renowned in the ancient world for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious system of dams and water channels. After passing tombs outside the city, you come to the "Siq", an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone almost 1.5 miles long. This winding fissure separates overhanging cliffs that appear to meet 300 feet overhead. Near the end of the passage, the Siq makes one last turn with great style, and out of the gloom Petra's most impressive monument, Al Khazneh (The Treasury) appears in the towering brightness. Beyond Al Khazneh, you are surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra's civic buildings - soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a curved Roman theatre (seating 3,000), large and small houses, burial chambers, banquet halls and more.
Option: Perhaps return to the ancient city after dark when it is all especially lit up with candles, giving the city a different and slightly fairy-tale ambiance (Mon / Wed / Thu only).

Day 5 Wadi Rum
Continue south into the magical desert of Wadi Rum. On entering the park, drive through the stunning scenery into the heart of the desert and visit some of the less frequented locations such as the narrow canyons on the way to Jebel Burdah and the natural rock bridge of Um Fruth. Along the way, your Bedouin driver will prepare a picnic lunch. In the late afternoon, arrive at your camp, which is specially designed to allow you to appreciate the scenery all around and the fabulous, glistening, star-filled night sky.
Overnight: Sun City Desert Camp

Day 6 The Dead Sea
Rise early and depart from Wadi Rum as you head back north, bound for the Dead Sea. On arrival check-in to your resort and spend the afternoon relaxing at the lowest spot on earth and floating in the famous salt-laden waters of the Dead Sea.
Option: Before leaving this entrancing desert, you might like to see it from above on a microlight or a hot-air balloon flight.
