DISCOVER REMOTE SETTLEMENTS
Ponant | Nathalie Michel
Having staged the courageous exploits of countless intrepid explorers, the Arctic is dotted with historic sites which beckon to be explored. While these settlements are few and far between, they can still be found in the way of small mining settlements and hunters’ cabins. Among the most fascinating settlements is that of Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland. Located at the entrance to the world’s largest fjord system, Scoresbysund, Ittoqqortoormiit is surrounded by a large ice cap for nine months of the year and, with the nearest town located some 500 miles to the south, it is the one of the most remote settlements in the world. Those who make it to Scoresbysund will find a small village punctuated with beautifully coloured houses home to a thriving Inuit community. Primarily living on fishing and hunting, the residents here delight in sharing their customs and traditions with the few guests they are able to welcome.
